Speed vs. ecology

Unlimited German autobahn speeds conflict with ecologically friendly powertrains, said Akihito Saito, executive vice president of Toyota.

Toyota hopes to convert leadership in fuel cell and hybrid powertrain vehicles into annual global sales of 300,000 hybrid vehicles by 2005.

The Japanese carmaker will launch a new version of its gasoline/electric hybrid model, the Prius, in Europe in late spring.

But Toyota thinks driving habits should change to match the characteristics of hybrids.
