Volvo safety concerns

Volvo engineers think an active safety system that reads the road and keeps cars in the lane could dramatically reduce accidents caused by driver distraction and drowsiness.

Such accidents caused 35 percent of one-car accidents in Germany in 2001.

In a technical paper presented earlier this month at the Society of Automotive Engineers World Congress in Detroit, Volvo chassis engineer Jochen Pohl said Volvo's Lane Departure Warning System could prevent drivers from veering off the road.
