LIGHTNING STRUCK Jack Smith in Europe. Over here, almost overnight, his career picked up so much momentum that it was clear he'd go all the way.

And for that he owes Friedrich Lohr a tremendous debt of gratitude.

Smith, who retires as chairman of General Motors this month, arrived in Europe in the summer of 1986. At first, he wasn't the top man.
