Sales declines for the Mercedes-Benz A-class and C-class models are offsetting the success of the latest-generation E class.
Worldwide Mercedes sales fell 0.6 percent from January to May 2003 compared with the same period last year. But without the strong-selling E class - which rivals the BMW 5 series and Audi A6 in the medium-luxury segment - Mercedes' decline would have been more severe.
Global sales of the A class, Mercedes' smallest model, were down more than 10 percent in the first five months.
