Hella will re-enter the cruise-control sector with an adaptive system using optics rather than radar.
Since the first adaptive cruise control system by German supplier ADC appeared in 1999 on the Mercedes-Benz S class, radar-based systems have captured about 80 percent of the segment.
Largely limited to high-end vehicles because of expensive, delicate circuitry, adaptive cruise control systems are expected to expand into lower-segment vehicles, perhaps in the next 18 months.
