Once Jaguar's new diesel X-type reaches the market this autumn, the company's officials expect European sales of their smallest car will quickly reach 60 percent diesel.

Jaguar officials have made much of the fact their X-type is the gasoline-engine leader in some markets in the lower-luxury sector. But selling more gasoline engine cars in a segment that reaches 80 percent diesel penetration in some countries is not going to make you overall lower-luxury leader.
