Volkswagen will at least double its production capacity in China to 1.4 million units in the next four to five years. VW wants to keep up with roaring demand and protect its dominant market position.

Analysts were quick to caution that such a dramatic increase by VW, coupled with ambitious production plans by several other automakers, could tip the Chinese market into overcapacity and a profit-eroding glut.
