MG Rover's new CityRover and Streetwise fall into the same category as other products launched since the group became independent in May 2000. Like MG versions of Rovers and commercial van derivatives of the Rover 25, the new cars were conceived to broaden the British carmaker's appeal with minimal investment.
The CityRover is a version of the Indica made by Tata in Pune, India. It will go on sale in the UK in November at under [pounds sterling]6,500 and in the rest of Europe at [euro]9,000 to [euro]11,000. MG Rover hopes to sell 30,000 a year.
