A threat of legal action from Renault has forced Fiat to rename its new Gingo mini.

Renault said "Gingo" sounds too similar to "Twingo," which is the name of the French carmaker's 10-year-old entry-level model.

Renault was ready to take Fiat to court unless it dropped the Gingo name. The Italian automaker backed down and is expected to announce that it will continue to use the name Panda.

The Panda, introduced in March 1980, is going out of production at the end of September. Fiat's new mini is replacing both the original Panda ...
