Louis Schweitzer pulled off one of the most daring coups in auto industry history: the purchase and rescue of Nissan.

In 1989, Schweitzer had Renault plough $5.4 billion (E5 billion at the time) in the near-bankrupt Japanese company. Four years later, returns on that investment are handsome.

Nissan is expected to contribute E859 million to Renault's net income in the first half of this year. Adding Nissan's contributions the three previous years, Renault will have recouped half its initial investment.
