At first, everyone said Renault defeated Fiat when in late July it forced the Italian carmaker to rename its minicar from the Gingo to the Panda.

The French company had deemed Gingo too close to its own Twingo and it signaled it was ready to go to court if the name was not changed.

This was clearly a blow to Fiat. Less than 40 days before it planned to present the car to the world press on September 1, it had to announce it was changing its name.
