Fiat Auto's progressive exit from niche vehicles is threatening the future of the remnants of Italy's once-thriving coachbuilding sector.

Of more than 60,000 vehicles built by Italian coachbuilders in 2002, less than 4,000, or 6 percent, were for Italian makers. From seven models that Fiat or Fiat-owned brands subcontracted to coachbuilders in 2000, the Italian automaking group had slashed that to three models by last year. Only two of those will be replaced.
