Front-wheel drive, underfloor transverse engine

The A platform was developed for the A class. It is used for both standard and long-wheelbase versions.

For the longer A class, engineers stretched the car by 170mm for a 2593mm wheelbase.

Mercedes also changed the floorpan, body side panels, rear doors and roof assembly to extend the overall length to 3770mm.
