Valmet, on the southwest coast of Finland, is one of the most remote plants in the European assembly industry.
Valmet has a tradition of high-quality assembly of upmarket niche vehicles but has been hit by the loss of important contracts forcing the company to halve its 1,500 work force.
The company built 41,000 Saab 9-3 convertible, Saab 9-5 hatchback and Porsche Boxster models in 2002 but the contract for the new Saab 9-3 convertible was won by Magna Steyr in Austria. In April production of the Saab models at Valmet ceased.
