German roofing systems supplier Webasto may open a plant near a Volkswagen assembly plant in Setubal, Portugal.

"Meetings between Volkswagen and Webasto are in the final stage, and the contract should be signed in the next few weeks,"1 said a Volkswagen source.

Webasto spokesman Hans Joachim Lessear said the decision on a Portugal plant has not been made.

The fate of a new Webasto plant may rest on where Volkswagen decides to build the convertible version of the next-generation Golf. The new Golf will go on sale in early 2004. ...
