When Peugeot pioneered the diesel particulate filter three years ago, the car industry reacted in disbelief.
Tackling the problem of diesel soot by improving the combustion process was a better idea, German carmakers said.
But they ran out of time and were forced to react quickly when German Environment Minister Jurgen Trittin said publicly that 14,000 Germans were dying each year because of diesel emissions.
All of a sudden, diesel particulate filters were said to offer the solution, and they became a big issue at the IAA in Frankfurt.
