In some ways, European automakers can make light of a renewed Japanese effort in Europe. In other ways, they have cause for alarm.

Toyota is two years ahead of its timetable and expects to reach 800,000 sales in Europe this year. Toyota's new goal: 1.2 million sales by 2010.

Suzuki plans to triple capacity in Hungary to 270,000 units annually. Mitsubishi's Nedcar plant in the Netherlands will stop producing Volvos next year so Mitsubishi can add capacity. Nissan and Honda are refining UK production operations.
