Volvo eyes China

GHENT, Belgium - Volvo Cars wants to begin building vehicles in China, probably sometime in 2005.

Curt Germundsson, Volvo manufacturing chief, said the automaker would probably "take the opportunity to use Ford's investment in China," or use Mazda facilities.

No final decisions have been made.

Volvo will sell about 3,000 cars in China this year, most of them S80s, Volvo CEO Hans-Olov Olsson said.

On Tuesday, Sept. 23, Volvo begins production of the redesigned S40 sedan in Belgium.
