GM's successor to the Omega will take the automaker upscale and challenge German premium carmakers such as BMW and Mercedes-Benz.

The automaker disclosed its future strategy with the unveiling of the Insignia concept car.

The two-door, rear-wheel-drive Insignia is likely to be the basis for a new flagship model to create a premium image for the Opel brand in Europe.

GM could also use the underpinnings of the Insignia to build a new worldwide range of mid- and full-sized sedans.
