The most ambitious convertible top on display at the IAA wasn't even on a car. French coachbuilder Heuliez used a wooden frame to demonstrate its retracting three-panel roof system.

Heuliez CEO Paul Queveau is aiming at Europe's most elusive target: an upper-middle segment hard-top convertible.

So far, nobody has demonstrated a folding hard-top large enough for cars such as the Ford Mondeo, Volkswagen Passat or Opel Omega. Reliability is a major hurdle.
