Renault executives believe the automaker is at risk of losing market share in central Europe.
The French carmaker blames the potential loss on European Union expansion. As tariffs are normalized among new member states, central European countries must lower tariffs on new and used car imports from outside the EU to meet EU standards.
So beginning May 1, 2004, Asian carmakers will pay much lower tariffs on imports into the 10 new EU member states in central Europe, the Baltics and the Mediterranean.
