German safety campaigners are demanding speed restrictions for the growing number of powerful light commercial vehicles on German roads.
Volume for the class defined by the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has almost doubled to 1.9 million units in western Europe in the past 10 years.
Many of these vehicles can reach speeds of 160kph and more. Their accident rates are higher than those of regular passenger cars. The German media has extensively covered many accidents.
