Smart is not worried that independent importers will jeopardize the brand's plans for the US market.
Two importers, in separate requests, have asked the US federal government for permission to bring the two-seat versions of the Smart to the USA.
"Our engineers say it is very unlikely that the current models can be certified in the USA,"says Markus Mainka, a spokesman for Smart in Germany.
