DaimlerChrysler is set to challenge Japanese dominance of hybrid engine technology in the USA.
The carmaker's Mercedes-Benz division showed an updated Vision Grand Sports Tourer concept car featuring a diesel-electric hybrid powertrain.
Hybrids are an increasingly popular answer in the USA to pressure for greater fuel economy and cleaner exhaust emissions.
Toyota, whose hybrid Prius won the North American Car of the Year award at the show, and Honda are market leaders.
