Three big companies, Schenker, TNT Logistics and Exel, have emerged as leaders in Europe's auto logistics.

Schenker's business has grown considerably since it was bought last September by Deutsche Bahn, the German state railroad.

Deutsche Bahn, which sold Schenker in the 1990s, admitted the sell-off was a "strategic mistake." The German rail operator has now chosen Schenker to spearhead its new-look logistics business, focusing on the automotive, high-tech, consumer and industrial sectors.
