General Motors' European subsidiaries Opel and Saab and its Australian division Holden are losing some autonomy as part of CEO Rick Wagoner's drive to create a leaner global company.
In exchange, the brands get more products, quicker development cycles and lower costs.
The trade-off is pushing GM's international subsidiaries in the same direction as GM's US divisions, which over the past decade became primarily marketing organizations.
