Jaguar will rely on price to lure customers into its new X-type station wagon and away from rivals Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW.

The strategy is similar to Jaguar's pattern when it launched the X-type sedan in 2000.

Jaguar is hoping the X-type wagon will further boost western European sales, already up 43 percent in January from a year ago, making it Europe's fastest growing marque.

Jaguar is sensitive to criticism that its X-type sedan has been a sales disappointment.
