German coachbuilder Karmann will open plants in England and the US, adding more systems-delivery capacity to its traditional contract-assembly operations. The move marks a shift to capitalize on the growing demand for roof systems.

Karmann will open a plant inside Nissan's Sunderland, UK, facility to supply retractable hardtop roof systems for the Nissan Micra C+C convertible. Production begins in 2005.

The German assembler will also open a US plant in Michigan to provide roofing systems for new General Motors and DaimlerChrysler vehicles.
