There couldn't be a starker contrast in the German auto industry. On one side are Volkswagen and DaimlerChrysler. On the other are Porsche and BMW.
It has been a difficult winter for the first two and spring isn't looking much better. VW is struggling to make a success of the new Golf, which so far is not meeting sales expectations. The same holds for the Phaeton, VW's first entry into the luxury market. VW has just embarked on another round of cost cutting, as group performance in the first quarter fell below expectations.
