Automakers and suppliers are bracing themselves for a further rise in steel prices.
The cost of cold-rolled steel, the main material for auto body construction, will increase in the next two quarters, according to Luxembourg-based Arcelor, the world's largest steel producer.
Cold-rolled steel prices have increased almost 30 percent in the past six months.
"We have announced price increases for the second quarter of 2004 and prices are also expected to go up in the third quarter," says Arcelor spokesman Jean Lesar.
