While politicians debate the eventual borders of the European Union, the auto industry has already spread far beyond western Europe.

Based on production capacity, the newest 10 members of the EU are split. The five central Europe countries have 13 assembly plants and 10 powertrain plants. The five Baltic and Mediterranean members have none.

But how much further east can automotive Europe go?

The next stop is almost certainly Ukraine and Russia and possibly Belarus, says Garel Rhys, head of the center for Auto Research at Cardiff University.
