Is Europe's diesel boom about to come to an end? In the next few years it's possible that more than 50 percent of the new cars sold in western Europe will have diesel engines. Five years ago it was 25 percent. Today it is 43 percent and rising.

But there are challenges ahead. They include hybrid powertrains and environmental legislation. In addition, health studies show that diesels pollute the air with particulate matter, also known as soot, and nitrogen oxide, or NOx. Research shows that those emissions can negatively affect public health.
