Combined new-car sales in nine central European countries rose 3.5 percent in the first quarter compared with the same period a year earlier, but results were wildly uneven.

Ford, Renault, Toyota and Fiat each gained about 2 points of market share from the first quarter of 2003.

But Suzuki lost 4.7 market share points as the new Ignis failed to make up for lost Swift sales. Volkswagen group shed 2.4 points of its region-leading position as all its brands lost sales, led by Seat, which fell 33.6 percent to 5,109 units.
