Renault is late in joining China's booming passenger-car market because it had its hands full in Japan, Korea and eastern Europe.
While other large automakers were building up joint ventures in China in the past five years, Renault was cementing its alliance with Japan's Nissan, which Renault rescued from near-bankruptcy in 1999.
The French automaker also had work to do at fading Romanian automaker Dacia, which it acquired in 1999, and with Korea's Samsung, which Renault took over in 2000.
