Daewoo FSO, bypassed by General Motors when it bought Daewoo's prime assets in 2002, has learned to survive on a shoestring while management scrambles to find a partner.

Some suppliers have put Daewoo's cash-strapped Polish unit on pay-as-you-go status, stopping shipments when bills can't be paid.

Still, by scavenging parts from other Daewoo plants and by cultivating relationships with flexible suppliers, Daewoo FSO hopes to make 60,000 cars this year. That's well below its peak of 197,000 in 1999, but almost double the 33,993 Lanos and Matiz cars it ...
