Despite clear advance signals by General Motors Europe executives, the company's announcement last week it would slash 12,000 jobs in Europe shocked Germany.
German politicians and trade unions are furious because they say that 10,000 of the job losses will come from GM Europe's German subsidiary Opel, which employs 33,000 people.
GM has not identified where the job cuts will be made.
Klaus Franz, president of the Opel works council, called for a one-day strike at GM Europe's production plants on Tuesday (October 19).
