BMW, Ford, Mercedes-Benz and Opel will start refueling hydrogen-powered cars in Berlin next month at the first public filling station in the world to dispense this clean-burning fuel.

The automakers are part of the Clean Energy Partnership, which also includes German fuel-station chain Aral and Linde, the German chemicals company that supplies the hydrogen. The partners hope to demonstrate that hydrogen-powered cars can one day be a safe, practical alternative to conventional gasoline and diesel vehicles.
