Automotive News Europe, October, 2004
BMW's rise in the US has come with a little-known cost: record fines for violating fuel economy standards.
When the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration issues its annual report on corporate average fuel economy, or CAFE, it will show that BMW North America Inc. paid more than $42 million (about [euro]34 million) in fines during the government's 2003 fiscal year. That year ran from October 1, 2002, to September 30, 2003.
The figure represents penalties of $14 million for BMW's 2002 model-year cars and $28 million for 2001, the automaker confirms.
