The German auto industry largely considers Chrysler group to be a complete drain on DaimlerChrysler, siphoning cash, resources and senior executives' attention from the core brand - Mercedes-Benz.

Ask a German automotive expert if Chrysler has made positive contributions to D/C since the 1998 merger and the most common response is, "Are you serious?"

"Mercedes-Benz has given much and gotten nothing in return - until now," says Ferdinand Dudenhoffer, a professor at the University of Applied Science in Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
