Adaptive cruise control lets the car hold a speed but adjusts to changing traffic conditions with automatic braking and acceleration. Traffic experts say they could smooth driving and reduce traffic jams if one in five cars were equipped with the system.
HOW IT WORKS
Old-style cruise control holds the speed once the speed is set. Adaptive cruise control uses a radar or other detector to adjust the accelerator the way a driver would. If traffic ahead slows, the vehicle slows. The adaptive controls also hold a pre-set safe distance from the car ahead.
