A personal plea from BMW Chairman Helmut Panke failed to persuade Karl-Heinz Kalbfell to remain as head of Roll-Royce.
"I said 'Karl-Heinz, don't just think rationally. Also listen to your heart, where BMW is written,' " said Panke.
But Kalbfell decided to leave the BMW group, where he has worked since 1977. On January 1, he begins his bid to revive Fiat's struggling Alfa Romeo brand.
"I will need all my muscles in my new job," said Kalbfell.
