Particulate filters are used to reduce particulate matter - soot - from diesel emissions. Soot is an environmental concern because medical research indicates long-term exposure could cause cancer.
German automakers have pledged to fit particulate filters to all diesel automobiles by 2008. A study by B&D Forecast predicts that all diesels in Europe will be fitted with soot filters by 2010.
