Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. aims to be one of the world's top six auto manufacturers by 2020.
Although moves like last month's bid with MG Rover to acquire Poland's Daewoo FSO operations are a sign of its ambition, simply buying technology won't be enough to reach its goal.
"They need a very clear strategy and also excellent execution," said an international consultant who has worked with SAIC. "Their lack of experience is in that area. There is a lot they have to learn."
