Spinoffs of partsmakers by General Motors and Ford have had mixed results. Ford sold Visteon in 2000, and the mega supplier has struggled since. The supplier of steering, chassis electrical and engine management systems posted a $1.36 billion (currently ?1.03 billion) loss in the third quarter. Visteon still depends on Ford for about 70 percent of its sales. GM spun off Delphi in 1999, creating the world's largest supplier. The result has been positive. ...
