Existing internal-combustion engines require some modifications to operate on alternative fuels, but will not need to be replaced.

Instead of having to develop all-new capital-intensive powertrains, automotive researchers are focusing on tuning engines to burn new fuels efficiently.

Researchers expect the future to bring wider use of synthetic fuel blends - adding biomass-to-liquid or gas-to-liquid fuels to conventional diesel - to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions.
