Brussels wants to help European automakers be more competitive by streamlining the vehicle type-approval process.

European Commission Vice President Gunter Verheugen, who is also industry commissioner, wants to replace EU type-approval provisions with United Nations international standards. The EU currently allows automakers to self-certify vehicles of the same model but they have to do it separately in each European market.
