Fiat orders 5,000 layoffs for 3 months

TURIN - Fiat Auto will temporarily lay off a third of its white-collar work force starting in mid-April.

The layoffs of administrative and other non-factory personnel will last three months and are expected to save Fiat Auto up to [euro]70 million this year.

Fiat systematically uses temporarily layoffs at its assembly plants to balance production with demand, but this is the first time the carmaker has laid off such a large number of white-collar staff.
