Brussels orders auto retail study

The European Commission has ordered a study to see whether Europe's auto retail market is becoming liberalized.

Brussels wants to loosen automakers' grip on new-car sales and servicing to promote competition and reduce prices.

A six-month study starting this summer will investigate whether the auto industry is complying with the Commission's objectives.

Currently, automakers do not have to comply with normal European Union free market rules under a block exemption granted to the industry.
