The potential for better fuel economy and fewer toxic emissions from gasoline direct-injection engines is getting closer.
Most European automakers are preparing GDI engines for introduction in the next few years, starting with a BMW engine jointly developed with PSA/Peugeot-Citroen.
It has been a rocky start for the technology. Mitsubishi launched a range of GDI engines in Europe in 1998, claiming a 15 percent reduction in fuel consumption and lower emissions. They were based on engines used in its Japanese home market.
