When Sergio Marchionne unveiled a new industrial plan August 4, he said exactly what politicians and labor unions wanted to hear: Fiat Auto won't close any of its six Italian plants.

According to Fiat Group and Fiat Auto CEO Marchionne, Fiat Auto's installed capacity in Italy is 1.43 million units.

New paint shop emission standards, which will come in force by October 2007, will reduce capacity to 1.37 million units by 2008.
